This app is a personal project and is not related to any work done for clients. It was inspired by a client’s request to assess wind conditions in Scotland for rocket launch site suitability. The app uses real wind data from the MetOffice but is not affiliated with any client or organization.

Purpose of the App

The objective of this Shiny app is to help users analyse wind patterns across different locations in Scotland to identify areas with the most favourable wind conditions for launching rockets. The app visualizes wind direction and speed using windrose plots, allowing users to explore wind patterns.

How to Use the App

  1. Select a Location:
    • Use the dropdown menu to choose a location in Scotland.
    • The map will update to show the selected location with a transparent circle representing the surrounding area.
  2. Interpret the Windrose:
    • The windrose shows the distribution of wind speed and direction:
      • Direction: The bars indicate where the wind is coming from (e.g., North, South, East, West).
      • Length: The length of the bars represents how often the wind blows from that direction.
      • Colour: The colour indicates wind speed, with darker colours representing stronger winds.

Challenges

  1. API:
    • Navigating the MetOffice’s DataHub API to find the exact data required took some trial and error.
    • Originally planned to take a year’s data and create seasonal and yearly averages to display which time of the year would be most favourable for a launch.
  2. Data Processing:
    • Combining and filtering wind direction and speed data to create a single dataset for analysis.
    • Finding the closest match for coordinates to ensure accurate location data.

Ethical Considerations

This app is a personal project and does not use confidential or proprietary client data. The wind data is sourced from the MetOffice and is used for demonstration purposes only. The app is designed to be a tool for exploring wind patterns and is not intended for actual rocket launch planning.

    • Include options to analyse wind height and atmospheric pressure for more comprehensive weather assessment.

    • Allow users to select a specific date or date range instead of viewing averages.

    • Integrate real-time weather data for up-to-date analysis.
  4. Enhanced UI:
    • Add more interactive elements, such as tooltips and animations.
    • Include a tutorial or guide for first-time users.
  5. Advanced Analysis:
    • Add statistical summaries (e.g., average wind speed, dominant wind direction).
    • Include historical wind data for trend analysis.
